PMS Summer Assignments

Summer Assignments

As another school year comes to a close and summer approaches, we know many families are making plans for their children’s summer activities. While summer is a wonderful time for fun and relaxation, the extended break from school can often lead to a decline in academic progress—commonly known as the “Summer Slide.” To help prevent this, Poquoson Middle School encourages all current and rising middle school students to participate in the Poquoson Public Library’s Summer Reading Challenge, which runs from June 16th through August 8th.

The challenge includes a series of three reading activity cards, each offering a variety of engaging tasks. To advance to the next card, students must complete at least five activities. Completing an additional five activities on any card earns a free book! The program is designed to be flexible and family-friendly. Students can track their progress online at https://poquoson.beanstack.org or through the Beanstack mobile app.

Challenge cards will be available in the Beanstack app and in print at the Poquoson Public Library starting June 16th, with Card 2 released June 30th and Card 3 on July 14th. All cards must be completed by August 8th to be eligible for library prizes. For your convenience, Card 1 is attached to this letter for early review. Please note that the Poquoson Public Library offers materials for all age groups. It is important to note that the Poquoson Public Library contains content for all ages. PMS is not responsible for the books students select to participate in the Summer Reading Challenge and parent approval of all reading material should be utilized to ensure the selected items meet your approval for content and themes.[Check out the first challenge card here!]

The PMS English Department will check student participation on the first day of school: August 25, 2025. If students record their progress using the Beanstack app or website, no physical submission is necessary. However, if using printed cards, students must bring their completed cards—with a parent/guardian signature—to their English teacher on the first day of school.

Students who complete the challenge will earn extra credit:

  • 1 card completed = 10 bonus points on an assignment
  • 2 cards completed = 100% assignment grade
  • All 3 cards completed = 100% quiz grade

We’re excited to offer this opportunity to keep students engaged in reading over the summer. Thank you for your continued support in fostering a love of learning at home.
