PMS Summer Assignments
With the end of the school year quickly upon us, we know that you are making plans for your child’s summer activities. While the summer months are a welcome opportunity for fun and relaxation, the break from school activities often causes students to experience a lag in learning when returning to school in the fall. This lag in learning is often referred to as the “Summer Slide." In an effort to lessen this effect, Poquoson Middle School is encouraging all middle school and rising middle students to participate in the Poquoson Public Library’s Summer Reading Challenge. The program begins June 10th and runs through August 2nd.
There are a total of 3 challenge cards and each participant must complete a minimum of 5 activities to move on to the next card. Participants who complete an additional 5 activities on any card will win a free book! Each card has a variety of options for students to choose from and students/parents can record their progress online at https://poquoson.beanstack.org or with the Beanstack mobile app. This program is made to be flexible for all family schedules. Additionally, the Poquoson Public Library is offering prizes as students complete each challenge card.
The challenge cards will be made available via the Beanstack app and in print at the Poquoson Public Library starting June 10th, with Card 2 released on June 24th and Card 3 on July 8th. Participants have until August 2nd to complete all three cards and earn the rewards offered through the Poquoson Public Library. Card 1 is attached to this letter for your convenience and review. It is important to note that the Poquoson Public Library contains content for all ages. PMS is not responsible for the books students select to participate in the Summer Reading Challenge and parent approval of all reading material should be utilized to ensure the selected items meet your approval for content and themes. [Check out the first challenge card here!]
The PMS English team will be checking these challenge cards on the first day back to school, August 26, 2024. If students complete the reading challenges by recording their data through the app/website listed above, then there is no need to submit anything physically. If students opt to record their information on a printed out card, then they must submit their card(s) to their English teacher the first day back with a parent signature to verify completion. Completing the cards translates to extra credit for the student. If students complete one card they will receive 10 bonus points on an assignment grade. If two cards are completed then the student will receive a 100% assignment grade. If all three cards are completed, then the student will receive a 100% quiz grade.
Poquoson Middle School is excited for this opportunity to foster reading and engagement for our students this summer. We appreciate your support!
Sincerely,
Poquoson Middle School English Department
